McGrady’s Rockets have opened up an early 2-0 lead on the Jazz and are almost assured of a trip to the next round of the playoffs. No one in the West (or East) wants anything to do with the Rockets right now with a healthy McGrady and Yao Ming on cruise control. The fact that T-Mac has never won a playoff series is about to become irrelevant and untrue.
Yao is going to keep doing what he does every night, but I think it’s McGrady who plays the most pivotal role in how the NBA Finals will shake out this year. If he continues to play well in all aspects of the game and efficiently score for the Rockets going forward, they’re going to be very tough to beat. The Rockets have a great coach (Jeff Van Gundy), solid role players (Shane Battier, Chuck Hayes), a long-range specialist to keep defenses honest, who also happens to be a good distributor of the ball (Rafer Alston), possibly the best center in the league (Yao) and a player who is easily on the level of Kobe, LeBron and Wade when he’s feeling it (McGrady).
If McGrady continues to play at a high level, the Rockets will pose a tough test for every team they face, and they’re headed for a matchup against the Mavericks or Warriors. If they get by them, they will then have a date in the Western Conference Finals against (probably) the Spurs or the Suns. That the Rockets were able to go 20-12 without Yao this year (leg injury) makes the fact the duo is playing together even that much more threatening. The Rockets have been talking about how they want to be spoken about in the same breath with the Mavericks, Spurs, Suns and Pistons, and if McGrady’s back holds up and he continues to play at a high level, they could easily be crowned World Champions in June.

The player who will have the greatest impact on determining the next NBA champion is, not coincidentally, the player who notably struggled in his team's exceedingly noisy playoff-opening loss -- Dirk Nowitzki. In that Game 1 loss to Golden State, the Mavs' MVP candidate got plenty of help from his teammates (Jason Terry scored 17, Devin Harris 19 and Josh Howard 21) but shot just 4-for-16 himself (for 14 points). It's all part of a larger trend for the fadeaway-hoisting forward, who shot 50.2% on the year, but just 42.8% in Dallas losses (including the playoff opener to Golden State).
It might sound overly simplistic, but when Nowitzki shoots well, Dallas usually wins. And when he throws up a 4-for-16... well, Dallas still might win (remember, the Mavs went 67-15 this year). But the point is, when Dirk struggles, Dallas is at the very least vulnerable.
And if he can get hot -- and stay hot -- for the majority of the next couple of months, we'll all get the great privilege of seeing Mark Cuban do some sort of ridiculous celebratory dance come June.

While there are many notable names still competing in the early stages of the playoffs, many that could alter the path of determining the 2007 champions, there is one who stands out -- Bruce Bowen. This is the time of year you constantly hear his name, and for good reason. He plays defense -- something that cannot be said for a lot of players in the NBA. No matter who the Spurs draw he will almost always be put on their opponent's number one scoring option. He currently has the task of trying to slow down Nuggets super-scorer Carmelo Anthony, a task that might prove too tough even for the grizzled veteran.
Bowen is always there though game in and game out with one thing in mind -- shutting someone down. His offensive production has little to no impact on games but his defensive ability speaks volumes. The Spurs have scoring options with Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili but Bowen's effort on the defensive end of the court is the fuel to their offensive attack. He was limited to only 19 minutes in their first game against the Nuggets and 'Melo exploited his size advantage over the shorter Bowen.
If the Spurs are to get past the first-round or any further in the playoffs much of that success will hinge on Bowen. Without him on the floor opponents have the ability to run on the Spurs, a game that doesn't agree with the personnel they have put into place. As the age-old saying goes offense will win you games but it is defense that ultimately wins a championship.

Who'll have the greatest impact on determining the next champion? How about the past Finals MVP with the easiest path to get back there -- Chauncey Billups.
Everyone knows that the secret to Detroit's success is their style of team play. Any member of their starting five is capable of carrying them on any given night. But in the playoffs, you're going to play close games, and when in a close game someone will need to hit a big shot. Who better to take it than Mr. Big Shot? Billups is the Pistons' on-court leader and, especially late in the regular season, the team tended to struggle when Billups' shot was off. He's strong and quick enough to the point that no other point guard in the league -- from Parker, to Kidd, to Nash -- is capable of taking advantage of him.
Most of the players you'd consider as potential impact Finals players -- Nash, Nowitzki, Duncan, McGrady, Yao -- reside in the Western Conference, meaning that in order to reach the Finals, they'll have to go through each other. Billups and the Pistons, on the other hand, have a much easier route. They'll face a tough Conference Semifinal matchup against either the Bulls or Heat, but if they get through that they should coast to the Finals. The Pistons' team defense and ability to operate inside and outside on offense will keep them in the game no matter who they match up against, but Billups' innate ability to take over a game in crunch time can put them over the top. :CT_008:
