Tracy McGrady could not bear to watch the Finals. This, he said, had nothing to do with the Finals themselves. At least not in his case.
Still dejected after the Rockets' latest first-round flame out, McGrady said he had to look away, though he did not quite explain (and I failed to ask) why he was able to watch the Jazz in the next round.
But now that the last bit of another season is finally over, another champion determined, McGrady could look ahead. He did not sound the same, at least not yet.
He was position, hopeful, even, but that gushing optimism was not there yet. He was always over the top a bit in that way, but that was part of the fun, exciting even. He might be that way when next season is closer than last, especially if the Rockets make the moves he hopes. For now, he seemed to be still getting over the loss at least as much as looking forward to another chance to win.
He was, however, been as generous with his time and opinions as ever in discussing a wide range of topics, in addition to the Rockets issues in tonight's story.
On learning a new system:
"It's really not that tough. It's always basketball. That's what I do. I go out and play. And whatever system they put in, I'll do that."
On the Mike James-Juwan Howard trade:
"I hate to see Juwan leave. He was a great friend of myself and my family as well. He's a guy that provided great leadership. When Yao (Ming) went out, Juwan stepped up big time. That's another reason we were so successful last year, he contributed and elevated his game. I hate to see him leave. He and I understand, it's a business.
"Let me clear something up, really. Me and Mike have a great relationship. Ever since he left, we kept up. That's my mind. Just to clear all the air, me and Mike never had any problems. Never. I was actually trying to get him to come here. Last year when he went to Minnesota, I told him this was the place. I liked the way he plays. He plays with a lot of passion on the basketball floor. He gives us another scoring option at the small guard. As a friend, I'm glad to see he's back."
On Bonzi Wells:
"I want Bonzi to come back. Me and Bonzi have a great relationship. I think he can help our team. He's real happy that Rick (Adelman) is here. He wants the opportunity to play for Rick. I guess he had good times in Sacramento. He wants to be here."
On watching the playoffs:
"I have to say, watching Utah in the next series, I realized how good they really were. They were a monster. They had so much depth. They had (Gordan) Giricek, (Matt) Harpring and (Paul) Milsap coming off the bench in our series that were so effective. In the next series, those guys didn't really do anything. It was other guys that stepped up. They had a deep team a great rebounding team. We just couldn't match it."
On the Trail Blazers' choice between Greg Oden and Kevin Durant:
"If I was Portland, I'll go for Oden. That's a really, really good pick for them. You have Zach Randolph. (Brandon) Roy is unbelievable. Jarrett Jack. They have a great young squad over there. If they can keep that together, they can be something to be reckoned with.
"When I was (Durant's) age, I couldn't bench press 185 myself.
"That kid has unbelievable talent. He was the reason I watched college basketball because he is so unbelievable. He was so fun to watch night in, night out. Being 6-9, the things he did in college basketball, 25 and 11, that's unheard of, especially for a freshman in a tough conference. To put those numbers up every night, that's a special player.
"When I first came in, I was happy to have one 45-(pound weight) on each side. When I lifted that one time, I was proud of myself. I never lifted weights. I had natural, raw talent. I realized these guys are much bigger, much stronger, faster and I had to work. (He said he can now bench 185 18 to 20 times.)
"I feel good. I've been messing around at the house with a couple of my friends. I feel, like I'm still in game shape. I have no issues with my back. When I increase my workouts, I'm going to go back (to Waco)."
And on Jeff Van Gundy:
"Jeff did an unbelievable job, unbelievable. We won (52) games. Yao missed 2 ½ months. Put that in the hands of myself, a 41-year-old at center (Dikembe Mutombo) and a guy like Juwan, older veteran guys. For us to do what we did in the regular season, he did a hell of a job. I really tipped my hat to him. I didn't think we'd be as successful as we were. It's all a credit to him. He put the pieces together. He gave those guys confidence. He made all the right moves.
"I don't know (why he is not still the Rockets coach.) Great coach. Great guy. I'm sure I'll see him around. I'm sure I'll talk to him. Rick is the coach now. He's giving the orders, and I'll follow those orders.
"If he had the same personality on the sidelines and with the media that he has when commentating, a lot more people would like him. He's like that with him.
