Garnett trade will make impact throughout the leagueBy Frank IsolaSpecial to NBCSports.com Updated: Aug03, 2007, 02:38 PM EDT [float=right]

[/float]
You can't help but wonder what is going through the confused mind of Kobe Bryant right about now. Think about how sick Steve Nash, Mark Cuban, LeBron James, Jason Kidd and Isiah Thomas are all feeling this week after Kevin Garnett landed in Boston of all places.
After all the speculation and innuendo Garnett ends up in a Celtics uniform despite his agent, Andy Miller, saying in June that Garnett wouldn't play in Boston.
"At the time, I was protecting the interest of my client," Miller said over the telephone. "If Kevin was traded before the NBA Draft, the Celtics don't get Ray Allen. Once they made the trade for Ray, things changed."
Adding Garnett to a roster that includes Allen and Paul Pierce makes the Celtics relevant again but not necessarily a contender. Not yet anyway. GM Danny Ainge needs a more experienced point guard and a few minor upgrades on the bench before we can put Boston in the same class with Miami and Detroit.
But Ainge has taken an early lead for Executive of the Year honors with a pair of bold moves that demonstrate to Celtics followers that they are serious about winning again.
In the Eastern Conference anything is possible. Just ask the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Celtics could easily double last season's win total of 24 victories and get back to being a marquee franchise again. The day before NBA schedules were released, TNT and ESPN were scrambling to add the Celtics to their broadcast schedules.
Garnett has already made a huge impact with the networks and his arrival in Boston will impact many people and teams around the league. Here's the rundown.
Lakers -- The package of Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom was never going to get it done in a Garnett deal because if you are rebuilding you want young players, draft picks and expiring contracts.
Odom is one of the league's most under-valued players but he makes absolutely no sense for Minnesota. By losing out on Garnett, the Lakers will now turn to the Indiana Pacers and re-visit acquiring Jermaine O'Neal. Not only would I rather have Garnett, but I'd take Bynum and Odom over O'Neal.
Kobe Bryant -- Depending on what day it is, Kobe either wants to be traded or is backtracking. He's still not going anywhere this year but next summer is another story. Assuming the Lakers don't upgrade their roster, they may have no other choice but to trade their best player, who can opt out of his contract following the 2008-09 season.
Steve Nash -- The league's top point guard really must question whether his organization is committed to winning as much as the Suns just seem to be committed to avoiding the luxury tax. They toyed with the idea of acquiring Garnett but the club wasn't prepared to pay him the money he was seeking.
From what I'm hearing, Shawn Marion is unhappy with his contract and several teammates are upset that Amare Stoudemire won't play defense. The Suns' window is closing fast.
Isiah Thomas -- He's wanted Garnett for years only to have his worst fears realized; Garnett is in the Atlantic Division with the hated Celtics. The Knicks haven't won a playoff game since 2001 and will struggle to qualify this season.
Kevin McHale -- Knowing that Greg Oden and Kevin Durant were eligible for the 2007 NBA Draft, it's safe to say that the Wolves GM waited one year too long to trade Garnett. Instead, McHale traded his franchise player for potential. Al Jefferson may or may not be a big time scorer for a winning team. Who knows if Gerald Green will ever become an All-Star?
Here's the upside; although Garnett was the model of professionalism throughout his days in Minnesota, he only won two playoff series. The bar is not that high.
David Stern -- With the referee gambling scandal still fresh on everyone's minds, the NBA Commissioner received a huge boost from the Garnett trade. Stern will never admit it but the league needs Boston and the Lakers to be top teams. Also, with Oden and Durant heading to the Pacific Northwest, the idea of having Garnett come East gives the league better balance.

P.J. Brown may want to put off those retirement plans. There are many teams -- Boston, Phoenix, Dallas, Orlando -- that could use a veteran big man who can rebound and defend.
"Everything is up in the air," Brown says. "I haven't decided anything yet."

Speaking of retirement, did you hear that 43-year-old Charles Oakley, who hasn't played in three years, is looking to make a comeback? Oakley told me he's in better shape than 80 percent of today's players. I don't doubt him.
Oakley is also working on a tell-all book.
I'm not pulling any punches, true stories. It ain't one of those Charles Barkley fake books, it's a Charles Oakley book," Oakley said. "It's not an O.J. book, it's an Oakley book."
