Insider Interview with Alonzo Mourning

HEAT Insider: How are you doing health-wise?
Alonzo Mourning: “I'm actually doing great. I don't have any complaints. I'm ready to start my final season of my career. I'm excited about the opportunity that we have in front of us as a team. I think we have a group of guys that are really looking to comeback strong and redeem ourselves.”
HI: What were the factors that influenced your decision to come back for one more year?
AM: “I didn't want to end my career on such a sour note; getting swept by the Bulls is nothing to be proud of, especially with the level of talent we have on this team. I realize how good we are as a team. We didn't show up, we didn't play to our full potential. I want to have another opportunity to do that. I think that we are a very, very experienced and balanced team, and I know for a fact that with a healthy Miami HEAT team, it will be difficult to stop us. If we win it this year, it's going to be a storybook ending. Some thought I should have retired when we won it in 2006, but I thought it would only be fitting to comeback and to try to defend it. Our mental approach wasn't there to come back and defend the title. That's why the end result was being swept by the Chicago Bulls.”
HI: Because you play so passionately on the court, it looks like you can play for another three or four years. If you wanted to, would your body allow you to play beyond this season?
AM: “Yes, it would. But as a professional athlete, you want end your career on your own terms. The good thing about that is I'm able to do that now. God has really blessed me with the opportunity to come back and play this game at a very high level considering all the obstacles I've had to overcome, and now I'm in a position to end my career on my own terms. I want to go out on top. I feel like we have the capabilities as a team of doing that. I'm excited about the opportunity ahead. I know that all good things must come to an end and I've had an incredible ride. I just want to end it on the right note.”
HI: Your love for basketball is apparent. Are you planning on being involved in the NBA in some form after this year?
AM: “I have an incredible amount of basketball knowledge, and I think a lot of that is derived from having a Hall of Fame college basketball coach who was very knowledgeable of the game and I had a great high school coach who was also very knowledgeable. Then I was coached by Pat Riley , who is hands down one of the best coaches to ever coach the game of basketball at the professional level. With all of that training, I feel like I can share my knowledge with individuals and enable them to improve their careers. I've been playing basketball since I was 11 or 12-years old, I'm 37 now, so when my career is over, I'm taking one year off to rest, travel and enjoy myself. After that, broadcasting and coaching is definitely an option.”
HI: You've spent a lot of your summer vacation doing community outreach. How important is staying involved in the community?
AM: “I feel that each and every one of us as individuals has a responsibility to one another. None of us would be here without the help of someone else – whether it be guardians, teachers, parents, relatives, etc. – someone contributed to your well being as a person. We're all connected in so many different ways. If we all make a concerted effort and try to improve the life of someone else, then this world would be a better place to live in. I've been blessed quite a bit and I know all the individuals who have blessed me throughout my success as a person as well as a basketball player. I feel an obligation to help others. I'm not sitting on success for my own personal and selfish reasons, but I'm here to help provide opportunities for others as well. Muhammad Ali once said, ‘Our service to others is the rent that we pay to live on this earth.' To each and every one who lives on this earth shouldn't waste your little bit of time here doing just for yourself. Somewhere along the way, try to create a legacy for someone else.
HI: When is your book being released?
AM: “It's coming out when I retire. The name of the book is called ‘Resilience'. It's an autobiography. I have a whole lot to talk about. My life experiences not only formed and molded me into who I am today, but they definitely had an impact on so many other people's lives.”

采访Alonzo Mourning

HEAT Insider:
